Separating and Recycling

In order to promote a green planet I mainly recycle items. I’m an advocate of recycling plastics, bottles and paper. On a weekly basis I find that I use a lot of paper that comes from boxes, printing paper, and regular mail. In an effort to have this paper reused I separate it from the rest of the garbage.

Hopefully, separating the garbage will decrease deforestation and all the snowball effects it has. I also separate and recycle the bottles and cans that I use. I remind my friends and family to do the same, although at times I hear that it takes too much time to separate the garbage. A couple of extra minutes go a long way to making a positive impact on the earth and it’s natural resources.

Faithful say they see the Virgin Mary in this tree in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.Faithful say they see the Virgin Mary in this tree in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.

MYFOXNY.COM –On the corner of Cortland and Chestnut in a not-so-rich part of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., a steady stream of believers come to gaze at what they say is an image of the Virgin Mary. They come to photograph it, touch it and be blessed by this image in the bark of a small tree.

The image was first noted by a local man on Sunday. Police say a crowd of 300 gathered by the tree that night.

Explanations for the appearance of this image range from the massacre in Colorado to the need to reopen the church across the street.

Joseph Zwilling, chief spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York, said this is not an official apparition. He added that people tend to see this image in various places but they are not endorsed by the church. But he concluded that people taking inspiration from these images is a good thing.

When asked about the closed Holy Cross Church across the street, Zwilling said the image would not cause the Archdiocese to take any action.

I think the religion is very influential in many people, and their strong belief on it makes them see things outside of the normal realm. I remember that I went to see that tree after all the buzz feed went down, but I was not able to see or get a strong religious image.

I just felt some kind of respect for that tree, probably because all the news about it. However I consider that I got influenced by it surroundings  because it was full of candles, flowers, and church stuff.

I feel that people want to see what they want to see.

Art or Tart

What visual “thing” (it could be anything- a movie, television show, and ad on the subway, a funny cartoon) from the last month has stayed in your mind?  Please post a photo

This month I ran across a video that got me wondering; “What is art?” or “Who has a saying on what art should be?

I also wonder what would master artists like Leonardo, Caravaggio, or Rembrandt would think about the modern art. The virtuosity of the masters has been the inspiration of so many generations. These master artists create art that enriched people’s knowledge, with a clear message and a concise representation. Artists such as Michaelango, Caravaggio, or Rembrant generatad art by demanding of themselves the highest ideals, which depicted excellence and perfection.

It is difficult to understand how the museums and galleries tend to specialize in the later category of art “Modern Art”. Specializing in pieces that pretend to have intellectual meaning or a high monetary value.

It is clear that art is subjective, and the monetary value and its intellectual meaning it mostly behind the name of the artist, the name that they have built and maintained. Subsequently also the settings behind it is very influential in making this type of art can either be successful or a junk piece.

In this video one person decided to infiltrate a museum with a piece of Ikea art and questioned a number of patrons on their opinion of it.

The major takeaways: The people who go to art museums and some art critics are full of $%#^.., However art is subjective not to be confused with successful or transcending.

The Best Memories are created at Childhood and Adolescence

Flag_Ecuador This is an interview of my younger sister with whom we shared many secrets and memories together as we grew up in Tarqui, Ecuador. These were memories of my youth growing up with my sister Viviana.

  • What is one of the most beautiful things you have ever seen?

“When I was twelve years, I went on a high school field trip. I remember going on trips all over Ecuador. We would have the opportunity to go on class trips to the beach, to national parks like Cajas, and we visited several towns. One of the great things of being in school was getting to visit more schools in other parts of the country. Even though we had so many great trips, there was one that I absolutely loved. One of the most beautiful things I have ever seen is the planetarium of Cuenca. When I walked in to a building that was covered with stars. It was like walking into a dream. A ceiling covered with millions of magnificent shining stars, and planets”.

  • What is one of the most beautiful things you have ever experienced?
Cherry Blossom Trees Washington DC

“One of the most beautiful things I have seen is the Cherry Blossom festival in Washington D.C. I have never seen Cherry Blossom trees before then. When we arrived to the Basin, I could smell the soft, sweet scent of the trees. The entire Basin was painted with trees and I felt like was in a magical place. It was beautiful. The aroma, and the colors just were so overwhelming. When the wind began to blow, the petals from the tree would softly fly around me. It was magical.”

  • What is their favorite memory or story about you?
Homeward Bound

Homeward Bound

“My favorite memory with you is when we were little. Mom had just arrived home after having been away for 3 years working in the US. She brought us several gifts, and one of them was a movie with the picture of dogs and a cat. We spent days watching over and over “Homeward Bound”. We both loved the movie we just kept rewinding it. Then I remember that we decided to act out scenes using our own pets, Jordan a puppy, the old Boxi and Sassy. Jordan was the mischievous Chance, Boxi was the old, wise Shadow, and Sassy was Sassy. We would take hikes around our property and take our pets with us. We would leave them on top of the hill and watch them come home on their own.Awesome Memories”

A friend whom I met through family friends, with whom I also shared many secrets and great memories together as we grew up older in Cortland Manor, USA. These were memories of my young adult life growing up with my sister Jacqueline aka Jackal.

  • What is one of the most beautiful things you have ever seen?
Cabo San Vicente

Cabo San Vicente

“Wow, that’s a tough question for me to answer, it’s hard to pick just one beautiful memory. One of the most recent things that have taken my breath away was seeing the sunset in Lagos, Portugal. My friend and I stepped off the hot, muggy bus after 3 hours of travel and upon stepping off the bus we were faced with one of the most beautiful views I have ever encountered. Legend has it that those cliffs were considered to be “the end of the world” called el Cabo de Sao Vicente. We watched the turquoise sea take upon the hues of orange, yellow and purple. That view mixed with the intense summer winds flowing through my hair and the smell of the sea made it one of the most unforgettable sunsets of my life.”

  • What is one of the most beautiful things you have ever experienced?

Bear Mountain Bridge

“One of the most beautiful things that I have ever experienced was coming home after spending 6 months abroad. I dreaded and mourned the end of my experience before stepping on to the plane to return to New York. I didn’t think I would feel as overwhelmed as I did but it was a nice return home to everyone. I think coming home to the people you love is a beautiful experience. It makes you realize the strange way in which time works. You feel as if time had frozen while you were gone. When you return to your memory filled home filled with the people you love it warms your heart. After travelling and not having a home to call my own for that period of time made me appreciate the beautiful feeling I felt when I returned to my house where I grew up.”

  • What is their favorite memory or story about you?

(she laughed as I asked her this question) “ Hmmm my favorite memory with you would have to be the summer you taught me how to swim. Out of all the summers and times we spent running around together pulling shenanigans, I think that was one of my favorite ones. We were all carefree and younger. That was the summer I realized that I loved you and that you were like a brother to me. We were in the process of becoming friends, since I’m sure you remember I couldn’t stand you and you thought I was an annoying brat. You taking the time and effort to help me overcome my fear of swimming showed me you cared, it was a pretty pivotal moment. That summer we also threw you a birthday party where we destroyed one of your cakes because we thought it would be funny to have a cake fight. Not to be corny but having you in my life was one of the best surprises I’ve ever gotten.”

Biological Cycle

This was my presentation for the Biological Cycle. Its was a new experience to talk about my project and make it understandable to the class.

Slide One

Screen Shot 2015-02-26 at 11.42.14 AM

Introduction Slide

_My name is Diego and I’m going to discuss the biological life cycle and how it’s the driving force for my project which will be a time lapse video

  • The inspiration for this project came from friends who eat delicious home grown organic vegetables and I get to enjoy the fruits of their labor. This is a hobby that I haven’t tried before and I wanted to see what it takes in a much smaller scale. There are other pieces to the project that I’m going to discuss in a bit about how I intend to make this project go beyond just trying to grow delicious vegetables.

Slide Two

  • So how many of you like to garden or have grown either food or flowers? How long have you been gardening?
  • (Great – so maybe you guys can give me some insider tips )
  • Can anyone tell me what you see in the first photo ?
  • Photo 1 is of food scraps that we all produce. Most people throw the scraps out as garbage where it then goes to landfills, decomposes and omits toxic gases for the ozone layer. However, the food scraps can actually be recycled by using it for compost which provides nutrients and improves plant growth.
  • The process shown here (point to the slide) is the biological life cycle in which the plant goes through a series of changes in form, and returns to the starting state. Basically the plant itself becomes food for new generation of plants.
  • This is the process that I hope to capture as part of my project.

Was anyone part of the People’s Climate March ? This was a huge demonstration in NYC of 400,000 who were all seeking the health of the earth- for environmental improvements. This leads me to another aspect of my project, which is to help further this very cause. Once the time lapse video is complete, I hope to share it as a way of further promoting green projects. My small piece in the movement to improve our environment.

I’m going to grow vegetables in a large fish tank using only natural light and food scraps which will act as compost. I’m taking as many photographs as possible which I’ll put together to turn it into a time lapse video.

I got the idea to do a time lapse video from Rob Carter’s video “Faith of the Seed”. Here I got to talk about the photographer that influenced me for the gardening project.

Slide Five

Any questions or Comments? During this slide I concluded my presentation, and added any other information about the purpose of the project.

I also got to show my time lapse video of 15 sec that was done with photographs in a lapse of three hours, however, it was not related but i got to explain how my final composition will look.

Assuming I’m able to successfully grow the vegetables I will have delicious home grown foods, I’ll be a somewhat experienced gardener, and I will have a video that will promote green practices.

This was a cool and a new experience presenting to the class. The Professor was recording all presentations, and after each presentation all the classmates got the chance to write a critique.

Even though these notes were prepared I may have missed some points, and according to some of the critique I didn’t make it clear my intentions. It was also pointed out that I should talk more about the photography techniques.

I got the chance to give a second presentation because the first recording was lost. In this presentation I developed further my slides and I got to talk more about my plan.

One more time the show in New York Fashion Week is presented at the Lincoln Center. The recently graduated students of The Art Institutes set one of the shows.

The first model to walk the runway was Megan Silcott with an outfit specially designed for her by a recently graduated designer Nina Perdomo.  In late 2012 Megan was that 1 in every 250,000 people that each year are severely impacted with ADEM (Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis).

Couple years ago Megan Silcott was told by the doctors that she will never walk again, but despite what they said, she never gave up hope. She had a dream that one day she would walk the runway. In this day, February 18th, Megan, with a help of a walker walked and opened the runway for The Arts Institutes.

Megan is a perfect example of a person that never gave up her dreams or her hopes. A woman who is confident, strong, and knows exactly what she wants from life, and will not let any challenges stop her from succeeding.

This image is the one that got my attention. Even though I don’t personally know this woman I’m so proud of her and the message that she sends to an audience who tends to be superficial. Beauty goes past the image and is within the spirit. Megan also sent a message of hope and strength to everyone.

Megan you show the word that everything is possible!
